Twas the night before Christmas, not a creature was stirring...except the pesky Nationals. Listen I get it Murphy needed a home and he probably wanted to stay on the east coast. He probably wanted to stay in the National League as well. The Nationals do have a vacancy at second base. But why did Murphy have to be the Nationals guy? That kind of sucks. I just don't like the sound of Murphy having to face the Mets more times than say the Angels, who are in need of a left handed bat.
For seven seasons Murphy developed into a fan favorite in New York. He came up through the Mets system and was a third baseman in the minors. After the catastrophe that was Murphy out in left field, he settled into second base while still playing a little first and third here and there. He settled in at second base as an every day ball player. Consistently making contact and having a knack to not strike out. His defense wasn't anything spectacular and his baserunning sometimes had you wondering what he was thinking but at the plate he would do the little things. He would move the runner over, or get a single to start a rally. He was a team guy and when Wright went down with an injury, he stepped up as a leader in that clubhouse. But for $37.5 million over three years, he's gone to extend the rivalry with the Nationals.
I'm happy he got paid. For all the people that think that Murphy should have stayed a Met, if the Mets wanted him they've had years to resign him but I don't think he ever fit in their plans. I think he would have fit better with the Angels. His left handed bat in that lineup, playing second, third or even first base while getting time as a DH would have been pretty nice for him.
I think the Mets are looking at Steve Pearce who can play left field, first, second, right, and even has experience at third might be the new right handed bat. I'm not a huge fan of him because I still feel like the Mets need a guy that can back up at center field that isn't named De Aza. It just seems like a cheap piece for the Mets bench. Pearce might not be the guy the Mets should be looking at but maybe bring back Uribe for insurance at third base. He's a clubhouse guy and can play well with some pop. Maybe an Austin Jackson signing?
Thank you Daniel Murphy for all the memories! I will always enjoy the postseason that you had, for carrying the team to the World Series in the postseason and stealing third base will never be forgotten. Thank you Daniel Murphy!
Do you think Pearce fits? Who do you think the Mets should sign?

Alejandra De Aza Signing and the Ripple Effect
Alejandra De Aza. That's the outfielder that will compliment Juan Lagares out in center field. It will also allow for some flexibility for Conforto to come along during the season. De Aza signs for a one year deal for $4.5 million plus $1.25 million in performance bonuses. This seems like the cheap way out for getting an outfielder. This seems very similar to the Chris Young signing a couple of years ago: While they didn't know how the market would play out, they gave CY a deal for $7.25 million, while Nelson Cruz signed a deal for $8 million with the Orioles a little while after. I don't need to remind you of how both deals worked out. With so many outfielders yet to sign, I think the Mets could have tried to get the ball rolling with signing a free agent outfielder, a good one. Not one from the bargain barrel. I think the only thing that's good about this deal is that it's probably right in line with what De Aza was projected to make this year and the fact that it's a one year deal.
I like that it's a one year deal so that they can go after another outfielder, or in the best case scenario, Lagares shows he can hit pitchers from both sides of the mound and Conforto proves he's an every day left fielder. Lagares is a premium defensive centerfielder while his offense has coaches yearning for more. I like Lagares and what he brings to the table. His defense is exciting to watch and it's something that is starting to be noticed and coveted (ie Jason Heyward). His offense isn't so bad. He's a bottom of the order hitter. Sure, I'd like a better bat in the lineup, but that's where the corner fielders come into play. But why not? A ball in the mitt can win the game just as much as a ball over the fence.
I would be kind of surprised if De Aza made it on the team for the whole year. De Aza is not a starter, so if a starter had to spend time away from the MLB roster due to injury or more seasoning, they would need someone other than De Aza. They could still be in the market for another bat with Michael Cuddyer retiring, but that's more of a right handed bat off the bench. I wouldn't mind seeing Austin Jackson in orange and blue. He could sign for something inexpensive and his upside is way higher than De Aza. I think that Jackson, with all the lefties already on this team, would be a good fit.
I like to believe that this deal still leaves a chance for a Cespedes or Justin Upton signing, but I don't think that either of those guys were ever an option for this lineup.
What do you think? As far as outfielders, who do you think the Mets should sign next?

Just Some Thoughts
It's interesting how many big names are still out there on the market and yet the White Sox still opted to trade for Todd Frazier. I really like this trade for all three parties. What I like most is the fact that Todd Frazier gets out of the National League. Unfortunately the Mets face the White Sox this season, so someone will be facing Abreu and Frazier, in some order, probably back to back. I feel like the Reds could have gotten more for Frazier though but still the haul that they received was good and this is one of those trades that it looks like everyone made out in.
As far as free-agents that are out there still, Chris "Crush" Davis is still out there. After having a bounce back year with the Orioles, the Orioles had taken a 7 year $150 million deal taken off the table. This is still a Boras client and Boras likes to wait, and as we've seen in the past, sometimes it might be harmful to the client. $21 million a year isn't too bad for a guy that is usually top five in the league in strikeouts. He is also top five in round trippers and that's why he'd be making that money. With a league that has been taking in some sabermetrics, and basing contracts off that. Like the Heyward contract, age (26) and great defense really pushed that contract to what it was. A free agent that has made it to the big leagues, being only 26 is really unheard of in this era. He is also a great defenser. So unlike Heyward, Davis isn't going to battle for a gold glove but he will crush homers and be a threat in the middle of any offense. Davis can play any of the corners. He has spent most of his recent time at first but has played left and third in his career as well. He is 29.
Now for the Mets free agent target. One of the last holes they need to fill, an outfield bat. There are still so many free agent outfielders out there. Justin Upton, Yoenis Cespedes, and forgotten nemesis, Alex Gordon are three outfielders that the Mets will be priced out of. It depends on who gets who, the Cardinals and Angels are looking at those three guys. But I think the guy that the Mets MIGHT try to cram into the lineup is Cespedes, but I'm not a huge fan of his glove. Heyward just made his money from taking away runs, as will Gordon (that's why the Cardinals will probably not get Gordon unless they trade Holliday). The Mets could move Granderson over to center make room for Upton, hiding Grandy's below average arm while having a strong arm in right. With Upton having a down year, he might be able to be gotten at a steal.
Now for reality. Span and Parra. One of those two names will probably be a Met by spring training, maybe even before Christmas. I would like Parra because of him being just below a starter but it's looking more like Span. I think it also depends on who will sign a one-year deal (maybe an option with that deal).

Free Agent Names
The Mets have a little extra cash they could spend and these are some fun names that could be seen signing before pitchers and catchers report.
First, just some fun. What if Ian Desmond could really play outfield? He is being looked at as an outfielder as well as in other positions. Maybe that's an interesting bat to look at if being an outfielder is something that interests Desmond. What if the Mets sign Justin Upton? He's kind of been forgotten about this offseason but during the season, he is a bat that pitchers need to remember. If the Mets signed him, you could play him in right and move Grandy over to centerfield. Just a thought for how to get another bat into the lineup- unfortunately at the cost of defense.
Some intriguing names that are out there for the outfield or bench players are outfielders: Will Venable, Denard Span, Gerardo Parra, Austin Jackson, utility man Kelly Johnson. I think Parra is the favorite out of this bunch for his combination of good defense, good hitting and he can swipe a few bags. Parra is able to play all three outfield positions. But with Heyward off the board, and the rest soon to follow, it will start to get difficult to sign these players.
The Mets bullpen was one of their weakness and probably their downfall, while it was the World Series champions strength and a big reason why they where able to win it all. With so many good free agent relievers off the board already, it was hard to find the good ones but I have a few that might be diamonds in the rough. All but one are left handed because I think they will be in need of a lefty come Opening Day- Hosmer and Moose bat lefty and I'm probably the only person who thinks they should have brought in Niese in the ninth inning of game five. These are just some bullpen arms to think about. For the most part they will be lefty specialists but could evolve into something more. Bring back Jerry Blevins to see if he can continue what he started. Craig Breslow is a name that has always been bounced around in the Met organization. Some interesting names are Antonio Bastardo (.138 average against left handed hitters), Neal Cotts (.186 average against left handed hitters), Franklin Morales (.192 average against left handed hitters and fifteen year vet Randy Choate. Those are all left handed pitchers. The final pitcher who I think would be a very good middle relief guy is Carlos Villanueva and is right handed.
There is only one guy who I think would fit best with the Mets and that is Bartolo Colon. I think that is the proper fit for the Mets young pitching staff. There is also Tim Lincecum who would be a nice project for Dan Warthen. They will need a fifth starter and those are two names that could fill the role.
What do you think? Who do you think the Mets should go after?

Happy Retirement Cuddy
Michael Cuddyer has had a great 15 year career. His retirement is bittersweet because he is definitely a great guy to have in the clubhouse but his production on the field took a heavy hit this past year. He would have been a fourth or fifth outfield and served as a formidable backup first baseman. But now that he is going to retire that means that the Mets have some extra cash they will be able to spend which is pretty cool. They could now look at Flores for a fill in at fist base even more now, just as a backup. Even though Cuddyer didn't have anything close to a great year for the Mets, he was a right handed bat off the bench and never really had a position/spot other than a high priced backup. The Mets will have to buyout Cuddyers contract but the rest of that money could be used on the fourth and fifth of, bullpen help and another starter.
Cuddyer was a great clubhouse guy and a presence for the young guys on the team to turn to. He finally made it to the World Series and his body can't continue to go through the daily grind. Cuddyer will be missed. Thank You Michael Cuddyer for your time with the Mets and time to the game. It was fun watching you play with your heart. You didn't have the best of any attribute except for maybe making contact some years but you always made sure you gave 110%. You left it all out on the field. It was really great watching you play the game. I hope you enjoy your well deserved retirement.

Moves With Future in Mind
In a stunning turn of events, I think the Mets are better off without Ben Zobrist. Zobrist will be 35 getting four years at $14 million. That's a decent amount for someone that wants one full time position. I think that a big draw to him is his versatility. The fact that he can play second, left, right average as well as fill in at third, short and center in a bind really makes his value that much greater even given his age. He fights every at bat and can play pretty much every position on the field. He seems to be a good clubhouse guy.
The Mets turned around quickly and traded a piece that was going to be expendable for a piece they are going to need. They traded Jon Niese for Neil Walker and I think both sides will benefit from this trade. Ray Searage seems to have a way with pitchers like Niese (see J.A. Happ). Neil Walker is a switch hitting second baseman. He started at second base and was batting fourth for most of the season last year. I think Neil Walker can bat many places but his better swing comes from the left side of the plate. I think he can bat second, fifth or sixth. He is a very similar player to Daniel Murphy. Neil Walker has a little more pop and has a higher strikeout rate. I think Walkers best attribute is his bat, another second baseman with a better bat than defense. I kind of like this deal because Walker is only here for a year (at worst) and if they want to they can trade him. If he spends the whole year with the Mets, and the Mets offer him a qualifying offer then the Mets get another draft pick. It was a pretty sneaky move with them now getting a pick from Murphy signing elsewhere. I think this move was set up with Dilson Herrera in mind to get him more seasoning in the minors and then when he's ready he can come up and take over.
The Mets also signed Asdrubal Cabrera who can play the middle infield well and has some pop. He once looked like he could be an up and coming player with the Indians. He is still solid and can be an everyday shortstop if they think Flores can't be. I think that with this signing it makes Flores the guy for third base on days that Wright needs off. Flores will take the role that Murphy would have if he wasn't a free agent. Flores should also take some grounders at first just in case he needs to cover for Duda. And maybe they look into trading Duda mid-season while Flores can take over at first.
The winter meetings are always a fun time. The Mets still have a lot more work to do before Opening Day. They need a lefty (Blevins? Hopefully someone else too), another outfielder (Parra can play all three outfield positions with more pop than Span), and Bartolo Colon because well Colon is like a cowbell and you can usually use more cowbell.
What do you think? What names in the bullpen would you like to see? Who would you like to see as help in the outfield? Would you like to see Cespedes or Heyward in a Mets uniform? (I don't think either of them really fit).

Ben Zobrist
So far the Mets top target is Ben Zobrist. I like him. He's a solid baseball player that can play multiple positions well. He can play the corner outfield positions (center field if needed as well), second and third base, as well as shortstop in a pinch. He can bat second because he makes contact and sixth or seventh with his ability to drive in runs. He won't be hitting too many balls over the fence and swiping even less bases. Zobrist is the kind of player that every team covets because of his versatility and everyday hitting capability.
Zobrist would be a nice addition to any lineup, including the Mets. But at what cost? Zobrist does not come with the qualifying offer tag, meaning the Mets don't need to surrender a first round compensation pick. Zobrist being traded mid-season has eliminated that cost. Now as far as the monetary value of him, what is it? His price will go up simply because of how many teams are going after him. I value him worth about 13.5 million over three years (making him 37 at the end of his contract). Maybe a vesting or club option for that coveted fourth year he is looking for. I think he caps off at 15 million over four years, but who will offer that to the versatile Ben Zobrist?
Now for all of you thinking, "What about Daniel Murphy?". Let me ask you this, who plays better defense at second base? Yes Murphy is younger and seems to have a career year this past year and he is always a tough out, will grind out his at bats and will work hard for the team but his defense just doesn't seem to be there for the 30 year old. Zobrist should be the Mets first option, mainly for second base but not limited to there. He adds insurance if Wright needs time off, if they can't find an everyday shortstop (Flores looked pretty good over there at the end of the season) and maybe even in center field. He will be signed to play second base but is an insurance policy for so many other positions while not having to rush prospects.
He also brings a gritty hard working attitude. He tries to do the little things similar to Murphy but looks more fluid doing it. I think Zobrist is a good addition to the Mets and can help bring a winning attitude, coming off a World Series ring to the Mets. He can make the kids in Queens more hungry to go back there and win it all. He could be a small piece, one that has more of an affect on this roster than Chris Young and Michael Cuddyer did in the previous two years. This is a Sandy Alderson signing that could very well happen seeing as how he likes to make minor moves in the offseason and then seeing what he has in spring training and during the season while evaluating and making the moves necessary to put a winning ball club on the field.
What do you think? Do you think Ben Zobrist will be a New York Met? Do you think the Mets will fork over the money for Zobrist? Do you think the Mets should go after a different player? Who would you rather have Murphy or Zobrist?

Thank You Daniel Murphy
2008 to 2015, 903 games, 3354 at bats, .288 batting average, with 62 homers, 228 doubles and only 440 strikes. Those are Daniel Murphy's numbers, they were with only one team, the New York Mets. Murphy came up through the Met organization as a third baseman but had to switch positions due to David Wright solidifying that position. Murphy is a professional hitter and goes out there and tries at defense. They couldn't find an infield position for him so they threw him out in left field and he showed that the outfield is not for everyone. That experiment was quickly tossed and he was put at first base where he looked much better. Then Ike Davis came on the scene and Murph was the utility infielder. He played second, third and first. The one consistent during all of that was his hitting, there is no question that this guy could hit.
I think Murph would be best suited as a utility guy playing first, second and third. I enjoyed watching him play and grinding out at bats, he barely ever struck out. Murph seemed very robotic but it worked for him. There is always a slight chance that the Mets could sign him but he clearly wants a long term contract because he is probably looking at at-most a $15 million per year deal but most like a contract of $10-$12 million over four years. The Mets might be wise to not pay that money for a guy without a position.
Seven years of Daniel Murphy, seven fun years of him wearing blue and orange in New York. If Murph comes back I would be okay with that but if he doesn't, Dilson Herrera or Flores look like decent options at second base. Herrera's defense is probably far better than both Murphy and Flores but the Mets are still waiting for his bat to catch up.
Do you think the Mets should resign Murphy? For how much if that's the case? Who do you think should be the Mets starting second baseman in 2016?
Thank You Daniel Murphy for all the memories I have of you hitting the ball in the gap and surprising me when you ranged to get the ball. Thank you.

Farewell 2015. Proud and Loyal
Congratulations to the 2015 New York Mets. They did a great job this season. They accomplished a lot and hopefully they learned where there weaknesses are and will add strength to their weakness. Much like the Royals did. Congratulations to the Kansas City Royals, they played flawlessly and deserved the win with their never say die attitude.
I'm proud to be a Met fan and the future is looking bright for this team.
2015 has definitely been one of my favorite years.
Although they lost their final game of the season, it was great to watch them play in the final game of the year. An expected treat. I'm happy with what they accomplished.
Thank you for a great season Mets.

Thoughts For Game Two
Down 0-1 and all of New York is tired. The Mets turn to one man. The Mets turn to Jacob deGrom. Now he might not be the pitcher the Mets want, but he is the pitcher they need right now. deGrom has been their stopper for most of the season. He might not always have his best stuff, but he definitely guts it out and keeps them in the ball game. The Mets pitching has kept them in all of the games. Familia will be fine after that shocking home run. Maybe Familia can now stop throwing that quick pitch? Especially since most of the quick pitches are fastballs left up in the zone. That's on a tee to someone like Alex Gordon.
As for the hitting, well the Mets can't continue leaving runners on base and expect to win a game. Especially against what some would call, the best playing the best. Here is another question I had immediately after the first pitch, "Why is Lagares not in the lineup?" Lagares hits, but then he's sat, Lagares can play defense, but then is just a defense replacement. In your scorecard it probably would have read 8 with a circle instead of a colored in diamond. Lagares has been great off the bench while Conforto currently has that lone homerun as his only hit in his seventeen postseason at bats. I guess you'd call me crazy by saying that I wouldn't be upset if Conforto was the DH tonight? But maybe that could help him find a swing, while Cesepedes, Lagares and Granderson man the outfield. It'd be nice to see Cespedes start making contact and maybe some of them can hit the green.
That being said, there is something in the air and that was still such an exciting game. The outcome sucks but at least it's been exciting to watch til the last pitch.
Cueto hasn't pitched well so far in the postseason, hopefully that can continue tonight. But he is always a threat to pitch well. The Royals have a very solid lineup and most of their hitters can use the whole field. It will be fun to see deGrom facing them.
Good luck to the Mets tonight with a scheduled start time of 8:07pm.
Ya gotta believe!

Mets vs. Royals Game 1
So today it all begins at Kauffman Stadium. Matt Harvey vs. Edinson Volquez. Game one of the World Series. If at the beginning of the year, you came up to me and told me the Mets were going to in the last game of the season, I would have laughed and said, "Ya gotta believe." Now I'm pumping my fist and saying, "Ya gotta believe." It's such an exciting time and these young pitchers have been consistently great. Daniel Murphy has other worldly and everyone has been contributing on both sides of the play.
The Mets have been a really fun team to watch, while Familia has just about saved the season for the Mets, let's look at what might have been. Flores should get an MVP just for staying a Met. I know it wasn't his choice but still he didn't have to hit that walk off homer two days after the no trade. But if they get Carlos Gomez, they most certainly do not get Cespedes. Cespedes doesn't go on the tear and say, "Hey Mets follow me, I know the way to the postseason." Like someone has mentioned, that no trade is the turning point of the season and the more I think about it, the more they are right. It had a snowball effect on the rest of the year. Even when Cespedes doesn't hit, his presence and what he could do is powerful enough for a pitcher not wanting to face him.
Daniel Murphy has six homers in six games. He's running the bases extremely well while playing solid defense. That 90 feet in game five was huge for the Mets. I hate to say it but he's probably playing himself out of Citi Field with this monster October he's having. I'd like him back but at the right price. Daniel Murphy is a postseason hero for the Mets and rightfully so. He's done all the right things while deflecting the praise onto someone else. He's a great team guy and when David Wright when down he was one of the leaders in that clubhouse. Selfless and a good ball player. During the regular season he tries to steal third (like he did in game 5 of the NLDS) but he gets caught. This is Daniel Murphy and he's been doing these things throughout the season, he's just been the punchline of the joke instead of the hero after the game. It seems to all be coming together for him at just the right time.
Harvey in the postseason has shown why fans want him to succeed. He's a bull dog out on the mound. I wasn't a fan of all the drama surrounding him at the end of the season but he's shown us that he can still do it on the field.
It's cold, colorful leaves are the ground (a lot of orange leaves) while orange and blue will be on a diamond (not a court nor ice) on channel five tonight. It's an exciting time around.

Utley Still a Phillie
Evidently you can take Chase Utley out of Phillie but you can't take the Phillie out of Chase Utley. Utley's slide started closer to Conforto than it did to the second base bag. How is someone called safe when he didn't even touch the bag? Utley ran off the field quicker than he ran to second. Hearing Cuddyer and Wright speak about it was great, they have fire in their voice. David Wright stared into the Dodgers dugout while Chase had closed his eyes with a headache. The person that seemed the most emotional on the team was Kelly Johnson. I loved hearing him speak. He wanted something to be done. The rules are in place to protect the players. The guy on the field with the most padding, catcher, has a rule in place for his protection. Why not the other players on the field? Like a rule that states you can't dropkick a player while heading into second base. Hit the dirt, THEN the player, not the other way around. Utley should definitely be fined and probably suspended as well but we'll see what the league decides to do. This is were Jonny Gomes would have really come in handy, Utley wouldn't have made it back to the dugout.
This injury will hurt the Met defense a little bit and the Met bench even more. Now the Mets don't have a potent Flores bat even though I think Flores's bat gets better the more reps he gets while Tejada's bat is better off the bench. Flores has been waiting for this moment probably since joining the Mets at 16 when the Mets looked like they were contenders, but now that Flores is on the team, he is in the playoffs and will be starting game three.
This will be fun to see in the next couple of days though. The Mets seem to be rallying around Tejada's injury. When things like this happen, it seems to bring a team even closer than they are. Matt Harvey loves the spotlight, well it's on him now. Game three is a pivotal game. There are very few stages bigger than the one he will be standing on at Citi Field on Monday. Maybe none as big with the controversy at hand. It will be interesting to see what happens tomorrow. With all the headache that Harvey has caused, he could put it all behind him with one simple game, maybe even one simple pitch. Lets see what happens come game time.
What do you think will happen on Monday? Do you think Utley will be suspended and fined?

Postseason Preview
Congratulations to the 2015 New York Mets! They came into this year with very low expectations and raised eyebrows as to how good their pitching truly is. Their hitting caught up in a flurry in the second half. With the additions of Cespedes, Clippard, Kelly Johnson, Uribe, and Reed in the middle of the season the Mets turned their weaknesses around. Johnson and Uribe helped out the bench, while Cespedes, well unless you've been living under a rock for the past two months, you've heard what he's been able to do. People have been calling him for MVP. Familia saved more than games for the Mets, he saved the bullpen, he was the most consistent arm in the pen. He rose to the occasion for the Mets when they needed someone to step up. Conforto came up to the majors and has been a very nice player in left field for the Mets since arriving.
Now for the fun part, the part I am more than nervous about, the playoffs. The Mets made it, winning their division and now having to verse the Dodgers. I don't care about Kershaw's previous numbers in the playoffs, he is still Clayton Kershaw. We all know what he can do with a baseball. Him and Grienke could be like Schilling and Johnson in the postseason. The key is to get to them early and then holding that lead, the Mets will have to get a run early and hope what has gotten them there will continue with their strong surge in the pitching. I think it starts with not allowing Adrian Gonzalez beat you. As for the Mets offense, I could say Cespedes will have to show what he can do in the postseason but I think it's also what Wright and d'Arnaud can do against Kershaw and what Duda can do against Grienke. Now do you start Duda against Kershaw and Grienke or do you go with Cuddyer manning first base? Bridging the gap from the Mets starter to Familia will be key too. The Mets will have to be able to play small ball, moving the runner over and getting the guy in from third with less than two outs. The postseason everyone starts at zero.
I believe! Lets Go Mets!

Division Champs
Okay Met fans, exhale. From Curtis Granderson working out a walk against Max Scherzer to Jeurys Familia striking out Jay Bruce to everything in between. The trade that didn't happen that led to Flores hitting a critical and emotional dinger against the Nationals to Yoenis Cespedes's historic second half. There has been something special in the air this year.
This team is a never say die team. In the beginning of the season, people were picking the Nationals to win the east with ease. Their pitching was going to be the best in the league, with newly acquired Max Scherzer. Bryce Harper was going to finally show up and carry his team to a postseason birth. The Mets had different plans. They let everyone think the Nationals where going to win but they kept the motto of, the future is now.
Nine years, nine years since the Mets made the postseason. In 07 and 08 we lived through the heartbreak, 09-12 we lived with turning off the game in the sixth inning, in disappointment. 2013 we had the same thing unless Matt Harvey was pitching, then we got disappointed that Harvey had to get Tommy John Surgery. In 2014, the Mets where just trying to stay out of the cellar and Met fans where just trying figure out why this team is a mid-market team. Now in 2015, this Met team has a great pitching staff and they were able to string together timely hits. The pitching is what got them their sixth division title. Familia stepping into the closers role, might have happened either way this year but I don't think anyone saw him doing this well after stepping into save the ninth inning.
First let me say what David Wright means to this team. He has been the heart and soul of this team and him coming back added such confidence to this young team. It helps that Sandy Alderson got the players to help make this push too. As well as the Wilpons seeing potential and spending the money to make the moves. The team MVP's would probably have to go to the pitching staff as a whole. Colon and deGrom as starters. Colon would just go out there and have fun. I think the young pitching staff around him feeling younger while he passed on his knowledge to the youngsters on the pitching staff. deGrom lifted this pitching staff for most of the season carrying them, being deGrominant. Familia deserves consideration for team MVP as well, he stepped up and saved games for the Mets in a great manner. Offensive MVP would have to go to Cespedes, he came in and helped that lineup so much. I want to give it to Curtis Granderson for how well he played also but Cespedes has definitely been the Met second half MVP.
The Mets are going to the playoffs, THE PLAYOFFS!!! THE METS ARE IN THE PLAYOFFS!!! 2015 DIVISION CHAMPS!!!

The DARKest of Nights
In this topsy turvy sport we call baseball, offense and pitching will carry a team during the course of a season, while defense will help magnify both of those things. Mets had a nice stretch where both pitching and offense were clicking on all cylinders. Now since September and all this drama surrounding Matt Harvey and his inning limits, the Mets pitching has taken a little bit of a hit.
Harvey was looked at as a leader, an ace of that staff but now in the middle of a meaningful stretch, seems to be looking to get out of working. He wants to get a doctors note from Scott Boras, I mean Dr. Andrews, and stop working then come in the postseason and pitch. The Mets don't need that. See, Matt Harvey is NOT Batman, he is not the hero this city needs. He IS Havey Dent, Two-Face. He complains about being able to get rest in June, but then turns around and complains about not enough rest in September, down an actual important stretch run. This is a very good problem to have in September but Harvey's innings issues could have been done behind closed doors. Just go out there and pitch. It's a 25 man roster (September up to 40) not a 24 man roster and an ego. 25 guys make up a team and if you play like a team, you could do so much better. Just like if pitching, defense and offense are all clicking together.
If Harvey is going to have a 60 pitch limit in the postseason, throw him in the pen. Pitch guys that want it! deGrom is going to be pitching more than he did last year and that's probably why his numbers are down. Have you heard anything about him needing rest down the stretch? What about Matz? He's had Tommy John and a slew of injuries. What about Noah with a promising future in place? I doubt that any of them have complained, but if they have, you don't hear at about it. Put Harvey in the bullpen, he could be good there, let him not go over 60 pitches in there and let that be that. Play for the team kid instead of seeing dollar signs. The goal should be to get that last win of the year. Harvey's goal is to get that last cent. I get it, it's your livelihood, but don't let the fans that have loved watching you know that while they are playing meaningful games in the second half of the season. Mr. Harvey, You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain. You still have time to become a fan favorite, but it requires you and Boras to stop airing dirty laundry and for you to pitch well. Good luck.
Lets Go Mets!

Cespedes=MVP?
Yoenis Cespedes has awakened a slumbering Met offense. His bat has seemed to be able to carry this team since August. The Mets were moving along, being able to scrap together wins, some wins left fans with us wondering how they pulled it out. Cespedes made the Mets more of a well rounded team, not one that just looked like a great pitching team. Granderson was arguably the Met offensive MVP before August 1, but now that Cespedes has arrived, there is no argument, Cespedes wins the Met MVP.
Can someone win the NL MVP that only played half a season on that team and in the NL? I think it's fun to think about as Cespedes has been the best player on the Mets, and arguably in the league. I don't think a player has meant more to his respective team this season than what Cespedes has meant to the Mets.
I think it's a little bit unfair for guys like Andrew McCutchen, Anthony Rizzo, and Bryce Harper, just name a few. Those three players have played with their team for the whole year, have been carrying their team game after game and that should hold a little bit of weight when the ballots get casted.
As much as I would like to see a Met win the MVP, I think it should go to someone who has been with the team for longer than half a season. Although it's just like someone being injured and coming back to help the team out, ie David Wright.
Do you think Cespedes should win the MVP?
Lets go Mets!

News: Two Games, Two Wins
These first two games of this series have been a roller coster. On Monday the Mets were up by three in the fourth, but then in the bottom half, Niese gave up five and the Met bullpen didn't allow another run cross the plate. That allowed the Met offense to chip away and eventually win the game.
Then tonight, with Matt Harvey coming off the controversial innings limit debacle, fed by the media, showed that he might be a little bit distracted. He put the Mets in a 7-1 hole before departing and again the bullpen came in and held the Nationals scoreless. Cespedes made up for his blunder with a three run double. In the eighth, Kirk came up as a pinch hitter and gave the Mets the lead. It seems that everyone is helping the Mets win games.
One of my best, closest friends brought to my attention that the turning point of the season might have been Flores crying on the field. I think it brought to light the fact that Flores is a good player and he has shown that the Mets made the right choice in keeping him. I think that that might have been the start of a snowball affect. Flores wasn't traded for Carlos Gomez, but the Mets still went out and got an outfielder in that guy with those bright armbands, Cespedes. Flores hits a game winning homer two days after not getting traded against rival, Washington Nationals, and it was off the races for the Mets. The Met bench seems to be a lot more powerful as well as their bullpen. It's been a great showing from all the players on this September roster. Seeing Familia's fire at the end of games has been really fun to watch. This team has been really fun to watch and I think my whole block knows it after Tuesday's game.
Congratulations to Bartolo Colon for being awarded NL player of the week.

Wright in Time for the Stretch
Okay I realize I haven't written for a month and I've been neglecting my readers with my opinions and analysis. I have been thinking about how to make a start my blog back up and I think I have a place to start. I think I'll start Wright here.
David Wright reentered baseball life with a bang. He started for the first time since April 14, on August 24. He went 2-5 with a blast in his first at bat. The Mets went on to win that game 16-7. His bat might have been there that game but it's not what he's doing on the field, it's what he's doing for that clubhouse. He brings a positive aura with him. That whole team plays a more upbeat game when he's around, that was evident in the series against the Dodgers when he was in the clubhouse during the July 4th weekend. The clubhouse just seemed a slightly more pumped with him around. It's showing on the field too. The Mets won seven of the Wright's first 11 games back including his first four.
David Wright's presence will not hurt this team. I think that his spot in the lineup should be in the two hole or five slot. When Wright is on, he goes the other way with authority. He goes to right field and can hit with two strikes, which is something that you like from your two hitter so it gives the guy on first the opportunity to swipe a bag. Whether it's Granderson or Lagares, I think either of them should be swiping bags. Cespedes in the three hole will give Wright better pitches and Duda in the four hole give the Mets a real power threat. Those should be your first four batters: Granderson, Wright, Cespedes, Duda-when healthy. They it gets a little foggy depending on who is defending where that day. If Cuddyer is in left, then he should be five, Flores six at second, d'Arnaud, seven and Tejada at short prior to the pitcher. There are other mixing and matching you can do over here like Flores five, d'Arnaud six, Lagares seven to man center field. It all depends one who you want out there on any given day. Sandy did a good job to get quality depth on the bench for this run, especially with Wright unable to play daily.
Lets go Mets!

Postgame Thoughts and Opinions: August 5
The New York Mets sit atop the NL East at 58-50. They are two games above five hundred and have a third of the season left. With 54 games left for the Mets there is a lot of baseball left to play including six games against the rival Nationals.
The Mets have been scoring runs due in large part to their ability to suddenly hit with runners on. It has been a fantastic thing to see. Their starting pitching has been doing great as well but their relief corps seem to have hit a speed bump. Luckily the Mets had an eight to nothing lead going into the ninth and they needed every bit of those runs. Recently acquired LHP Eric O’Flaherty, got his first taste of pitching in a Mets uniform. It was not pretty. He gave up four earned runs in only two thirds of an inning. I think he should be only used as a lefty specialist. His numbers prove he can get lefties out with a .186 batting average against. After O’Flaherty faltered, Robles came in couldn’t shut the door. He was charged with two runs in only a third of an inning. Allowing for Familia to enter the game for a save situation, he allowed an inherited runner to score (one of the two charged to Robles) but he shut the door for the Mets six win in as many games.
It would appear that Familia is a little bit tired. He isn’t able to hit his spots consistently. This isn’t a major cause for concern and I think as long as the Mets are able to find him some rest, having pitched in 50 games already, I think he should be fine.
It was nice to see Uribe hit the three run dinger. He even added a fantastic barehanded play at third base. I think Uribe might be the best fielding third baseman on this team currently and he’s shown he can swing the bat. The juggling act that Terry Collins will have to do down the stretch with Flores, Murphy, Kelly Johnson, Uribe, and Tejada, will not be an easy one. On the bright side, Kelly Johnson can find reps in the outfield but with Cuddyer slated to come back on Friday, Johnson will be a fourth or fifth outfielder.
I wanted to touch on something with Cespedes. He is looking for his first homer in a Mets uniform but he has been able to drive the ball. I think just his presence in this lineup, shows what one big bat can provide. Even in Cespedes first game as a Met, when he didn’t record a hit, the Mets won. HIs presence in the lineup, lifts the team, lifts the moral and makes hitters think about how to pitch to Terry Collins flavor for the two hole that day. I am not sure I like Cespedes in centerfield but I understand it. With Lagares trying to not land on the DL with a sore elbow, someone needs to play center and you want Cespedes’s bat in the lineup. I would like to see the defensive wizard in Lagares patrolling centerfield though. His bat has seemed to regress since last year and it would appear that has made him a fourth outfielder for the time being. I think he will be able to earn his way back into the everyday lineup, hopefully by early next year.
I am not used to this. It is August and I am excited to turn on the Mets. I get to see a big bat, Duda hitting, and the pitching everyday has been real treat to watch. I am excited for the next days starting pitcher as much as I am to watch the game on that day. Citi Field is rocking for the first time since they opened. This has been a team that has been excited to watch and hopefully it continues down the stretch, I have some games that I would like to watch and fill out a scorecard during that time! I’m excited to pencil Cespedes into that three hole.
Let’s go Mets!

Mets Sweep Into First Place
With the Mets sweeping the Nationals they lock into a tie with them for first place in the division. Noah Syndergaard looked great through his eight innings of two run ball, striking out nine. The Met offense erupted for five runs on three dingers in the third inning. Granderson and Murphy went back to back and Duda hit a round tripper after Cespedes got his first hit as a Met.
The only two runs off Sundergaard were solo shots off the bats of Anthony Rendon and Yunel Escobar. Syndergaard again brought heat to today’s game and the Met offense helped provide Syndergaard with his sixth win of the year. Tyler Clippard came in to close the door in the ninth giving Familia some much needed rest and a day off. Clippard looked good in picking up his first save for the Mets.
The Mets go to Miami to take on the Marlins tomorrow to start what should be an easier part of the schedule but there are still 57 games left in the season. The Mets will be versing a few more teams above .500 as well as the Nationals six more times. The Mets are versing the Marlins nine, the Phillies ten and the Braves seven more times. No matter the record it always scares me when the Mets verse those three teams. They always seem to be very competitive games. They also have a three game series against the crosstown rivals, Yankees which is always a competitive series. Hopefully the accusation of Cespedes is enough to keep this offense rolling.
Duda has been hot and hitting the ball out of the ball park, nine dingers in his last eight games. It was good to see Flores come off the bench and provide a hit. I still think that he should be starting somewhere in that lineup but it’s tough to find a spot for him with Murphy and Uribe needing to get some hacks. Tejada might be the odd man out but Terry Collins seems to want a defensive shortstop over a hitting shortstop. That is fine but it would be nice to see Flores in the lineup on a daily basis for the Mets.
The Mets have finally provided a team that is exciting to watch. They have put a product on the field that Met fans can cheer for. They are starting off a competitive August that Met fans haven't seen in a while.
Let’s go Mets!!!
Postgame: August 1st 2015
With deGrom on the mound, the Mets seemed to have the advantage at the beginning of the game. Unfortunately deGrom gave up two runs in the first inning off an Ian Desmond single. He seemed to settle down after that first inning. He still had to gut out six innings, never full getting in his groove. Lucas Duda provided all the offense the Mets needed. He homered twice to tie the score and the hit a RBI double that almost made it another three homer game. That RBI double gave the Mets a 3-2 lead and Familia came in to slam the door shut.
Cespedes looked good out in left field. He tracked down a ball with a runner on third that the runner should have tagged up on but didn’t. He ran the bases well as well. He is fast on the bases. Cespedes looked good in a Mets uniform without even getting his first hit. The Nationals walked Cespedes to get to Duda and Duda made them pay. It was a great thing to see.
I liked seeing deGrom gut out the six innings. He showed poise. I liked seeing Duda have a good game to maybe make pitchers pitch to Cespedes. Duda needs to be the guy to make pitchers pay so Cespedes can get the pitches to hit.
The Mets now sit one game behind the Nationals. They have the chance to be in a tie for first place tomorrow.
Do you think the Mets will win tomorrow? Do you think Cespedes gets his first hit as a Met tomorrow? How did you like the team they fielded today?

Now Batting for the New York Mets: Yoenis Cespedes!
The Mets landed their big bat! They got Yoenis Cespedes. He will be their left fielder and slot in at the three or five hole, leaving Lucas Duda in the four hole. We’ll see what Terry Collins is thinking tomorrow night. The Mets got a great defender that can throw with the best of them. He has a hose out there in left and will probably lead the Mets in outfield assists. His bat is very good but I don’t know if he will be able to carry this team by himself. I think Duda needs to step with Curtis Granderson continuing his heating. If Wright ever comes back, he will slide into the third or fifth hole, whichever Cespedes doesn’t occupy. It will be like a trade for a bat, and his moral boost will certainly help this team.
The Mets gave up one of their pitching prospect, Michael Fulmer and pitcher Luis Cessa. Fulmer was who the deal was centered around. He could become a really good pitcher but the Mets have so many of them already a the major league level. Some of these pitchers needed to net back something and they didn’t have to touch the parent ball club. They were able to keep the team chemistry on the 25-man roster that they have.
Cespedes is a rental player that I’m hoping they try to resign before the season comes to a close. He can play a great defensive left field and he provides a nice middle of the order bat. Hopefully the Mets are able to keep him happy so he doesn’t turn into this cancer that everyone made him out to be in Boston. But he seemed to not have that problem in Detroit.
The Mets FINALLY made a move that shows they are serious about wanting to win. They brought in this bat and are going to be making the push for the playoffs for the first time since 2006.
What do you think about the Cespedes trade? Do you think the Mets should sign Cespedes? How much do you think it will cost to keep Cespedes?
I just wanted to say that I really liked the fact that Zach Wheeler called and said he wanted to stay here on the Mets. I like that. He wants to be here, he sees a future with the Mets and sees a really good one. He could have went to another team and probably not have to compete for a starting spot. There still a spot on the team for Wheeler when he returns but there are a few pitchers that could overtake him but he still wants to be here in New York. I like that he took the time to call Sandy and let him know that. That should count for something.
Also the fact that Wilmer Flores hit a walk-off home run was a storybook ending to the trade deadline. He showed why he shouldn’t be traded. He seems to have a knack for coming through in the pressure situations.

Hip Hip No Trade!
Carlos Gomez for Zach Wheeler and Wilmer Flores. That was the deal that looked like was going to happen tonight. It seemed like a pretty good trade, Carlos Gomez would be the leadoff batter that they were looking for and Flores would be able to play everyday probably at third base. Zach Wheeler would continue his rehab, just for a different team.
The trade fell through when the Mets red the ex-Met Gomez's medical reports. It's no secret that Gomez has a bad hip well, evidently it was a secret to the Mets.
I feel horrible for Wilmer Flores who was left on the field. The fans gave Flores a standing ovation and it was really great to see. Then Flores started to cry and that hurt to see but it was great to see! It showed how much this team means to him. It's the only team he's known. He was signed with the Mets and then went through the minors as a Met, finally making it to the big leagues as a Met. I like to see that Flores has this connection with the Mets. I think it was Kaity's question that said a team was like a family, and Flores was sad to be leaving his family. I'm happy to see him staying with the Mets though. I still think he should be getting more at bats than he's getting currently.
Would have made this trade even with Gomez having a bad hip? Who do the Mets target now? Can the Mets still get a much needed big bat?

Tyler Clippard Gotten to Pitch the Eighth
Tyler Clippard going to the Mets is an interesting move for the Mets. They have a pretty good pen with Vic Black down in the minors. Clippard was brought in because at the time Mejia wouldn't be able to pitch in the postseason but now he won't pitch at all for a while. This Tyler Clippard move now looks to have even more value. Clippards numbers are good with a 2.79 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 17 saves. He's a formidable back end of the pen pitcher that will probably pitch in the eighth.
Bullpen help is always needed, especially when in the postseason. Clippard has some pretty good numbers and will pair up with Bobby Parnell to help bridge the gap from starter to Familia. There isn't much time left for Sandy to make a trade if he would like to strengthen this lineup.
Do you think Sandy has one more trade in him or is he done?

Sandy Trades for Two Solid Bats
I have been busy this whole weekend and haven't been able to write something about either of these trades that occurred.
First of all, the pieces the Mets had to give up in order to get the three guys, have no more impact in the Mets future other than middle relief. They were able to pick up two guys, in Juan Uribe and Kelly Johnson that are solid everyday hitters, that can play multiple positions. Uribe is probably best suited at third base and immediately upgrades you defensively at that position. While Kelly Johnson is probably best suited at second (or left field on this team). They both provide solid defense.
The thing I like most about this trade is that these two guys can very easily go into the bench and bolster a stagnant bench. The John Mayberry Jr. experiment failed but did anyone really see that flourishing? The fact that both of these newly acquired players can be great bench players, will hopefully make the Mets go out and get the bat they are looking for. These are veteran players that will help out in the clubhouse as well. They can show some of these younger players how to play the game the right way.
I'd like to see Flores still in the field though. He's a much better bat than Tejada and Flores has settled down from making errors.
Hopefully this move isn't the last of their moves. They are still missing that one big bat, that one guy with his lumber that could help provide All-Star numbers.
Is Jose Reyes available? I like him sitting atop the Mets lineup, providing that spark and energy that he used to. What would it take to get him? They will probably want someone of Miguel Castro's caliber in return. It's tough trading for someone that they should still have or should have gotten more in return for.

Kershawed Through Nine
Two words as to how the Mets lost today: Clayton Kershaw. He has everything working today. It helped that Kershaw was facing the Mets lineup though. This offense couldn't get anything working against the reigning Cy Young and MVP award winner.
Chances are even if the Mets had fielded a MLB lineup instead of a AA lineup, they still would have lost. I don't understand how Mayberry is batting fourth. Lefty or not, he shouldn't be batting fourth. He's a bench player that could bat six or lower. If the Mets can put Mayberry fourth why not put deGrom fourth or fifth in this lineup? And no, that's not a joke! Put deGrom higher in the lineup. If you can bat deGrom eighth and Mayberry fourth, why not deGrom fourth and Mayberry eighth? Maybe that would wake up the bats.
Clayton Kershaw, just doing what he does best, striking out batters and winning games...Hopefully one of the Mets pitchers end up half as good as him.

Mets Blow Late Lead, Back Three of First Now
The Mets set out this afternoon looking to take the series against the Nationals. They were up against Jordan Zimmerman, who hasn't lost in more than a month. Despite pitching well, Syndergaard hasn't been able to find a road win in his early career.
Noah pitched five inning, leaving with a 3-1 lead. His control was spotty surrendering five walks. Despite Noah not having his best stuff today, he looked like he was going to come away with his first road win of his early career.
Bobby Parnell entered the eighth inning with the lead but closed the frame giving up the lead. It became a 4-3 deficit, with Parnell surrendering three runs.
The Mets needed this game. Would they have won, they could have found themselves a mere game out of first place. Instead they sit three games out of first place with a difficult upcoming schedule in place. They have a ten game home stretch where they play, the Dodgers, Padres, and Nationals again.
This is usually right around the time when the wheels come off. Let's hope they get a bat that can help this abysmal bench and that the Met pitching can help them stay on track down the stretch.
With Wil Venable and Gerado Parra in the Mets sights as possible trade candidates for the Mets, who do you think it would take to get either of them? Do you think they would fit in nicely with this team? I like Parra more because of his defensive ability. What do you think?

Postgame Thoughts on July 21
Eric Campbell made Terry Collins look good by get a two run single. On Campbell’s first pinch hit of the year, it was bigger than just giving the Mets the lead. deGrom only had 82 pitches through six innings and could have very well gone for another one or two innings. deGrom was lifted for a pinch hitter and that pinch hitter put him in line for a win. The thing is I almost want deGrom in to hit for himself there because he’s a good hitter. The fact that Campbell came through was big because fans might have been saying should have let deGrom hit for himself there, but since Campbell got the hit, there is no discussion.
deGrom went six innings, surrendering only three hits striking out eight while giving up no free passes on 82 pitches. In the fifth he gave up a two run homer to Nationals catcher, Wilson Ramos. The Mets then had their bullpen set with Mejia coming in to pitch the seventh, Parnell the eighth and Familia the ninth. The Mets got some insurance runs in the ninth but with Familia already ready and this a must win game, Familia went out there to pitch the ninth.
I liked that Granderson swiped his eighth bag of the year. I like that he seems to be moving on the base paths, that’s really great to see. Is Lagares’ elbow hurting him when he’s swinging? He isn’t the same player and I think he need to take the time to get back to full strength. I wanted to say this before Cuddyer’s chronic knee pain that could land him on the DL.
Who will the Mets get for outfield help? Do you think Nimmo’s value is at it’s peak right now? Maybe the could package him and Niese for an outfielder and/or a shortstop. I’m really on the fence about trading Niese, I think it’s a good time to trade Niese with him being hot and all but will he really bring back someone that is that good, even if he’s packaged with someone else? Is Colon going to stay throughout the year? On such a young staff, he’s been the workhorse of the staff, eating up innings and passing on knowledge to the rest of the staff. He passes on knowledge while the staff passes on what seems to be youth to Colon.
I like the fact that it seems the Mets are playing more small ball, just trying to move the runner over. I still think they are in need of a bat even more so if Cuddyer finds his way onto the DL. It is too much to ask of Michael Conforto to come up here and carry this staggering Met offense.
Another name that is now out there on the trade block is Yoenis Cespedes. Would like to see him in a Met uniform? What do you think it would take to get him?

Doubleheader In One Game!
Eighteen innings! Eighteen innings of a 1-1 ballgame that should have been over in half that. 318 pitches seen by the Mets, with 25 runners left on base (1-26). That’s abysmal! The red birds left four runners on base and saw only 239 pitches.
Somehow the Mets pulled out a win in a game that seemed to never end. Keith Hernandez started to get aggravated. In the 13th inning, when the Mets first scored they left Plawecki on third base, with nobody out. I am happy they squeaked out this win but my golly, this game was troublesome to watch! But at the end of the day, the Mets remain only two in back of the Nationals. I’m happy they found a way to win.
I was really happy to see Granderson running. He stole two bases today and I would like to see more of that. Terry seems more inclined to put on the hit and run now that this team hasn’t been able to score. I like the hit and run for this team too, gets the offense going. I also liked that he put the squeeze on to take on another run. What was even more surprising than that was that Campbell actually laid it down!
Lost in all this was another great pitching effort by Jon Niese. He went 7.2 IP, fanning three, walking one and hitting one batter. He allowed only five hits. This is his eighth straight quality start. During that time he has only surrendered 14 runs in 55.1 IP. With this a sellers market, his value might not be going up but he certainly isn’t hurting his value. I think there are two pitchers that need to go before Jon Niese goes, and those two are Johnny Cueto and Cole Hamels. Once those two find new homes, then maybe Niese might be looking at a new home.
One fit might be the Cubs, maybe for Dexter Fowler? He will be a free agent after this season and he could be a leadoff batter as well. Or maybe if the Brew Crew are looking to take Jon Niese for, say Jean Segura.
What did you think about that game? What do you think about trading Jon Niese? Do you think they still should? Who would you like to see them get?

Series Matchup Against the Snakes
This weekend the Mets host the Arizona Diamondback. The snakes from out west. The Snakes ride in sweeping a two game series against the Rangers. They are five and one in their last six games. Their hitting probably a big reason for their recent surge that found them getting to .500 (42-42) coming into Citi Field.
First time All-Star A.J. Pollock has been swinging a hot bat having a seven game hit streak and having multi-hit games in five of those seven. He is having a breakout year with the bat and has always played a good center field. The Mets will want to look to keep this table setter at bay.
Yasmany Tomas has shown why he was so sought after. He was a player that I was hoping the Mets would get when he decided he wanted to play in the big leagues instead of Cuba, but the Mets didn’t want to spend the $68.5 million over six years, that the D-Backs inked him for. The 24 year old started the year in the minor leagues. He wasn’t sent there so much for his bat but for his defense. The D-Backs didn’t know where to put him, either third or a corner outfield spot. He started a few games at third when Jake Lamb went down but his defense their is well below average. They then put him in right field and his defense got better but he’s still at best an average outfielder, probably more a below average outfielder. His bat makes up for his poor outfield play though. His carrying a .313 average, five homers and even a few swiped bags. The Mets should look to hit it to him and not let him hit the ball.
The National League starting first baseman is Paul Goldschmidt. What can you say about him other than he’s been nothing other than an All-Star. This is the guy that you can’t let beat you. Challenge him with nobody on but his bat is MVP caliber.
The Mets need Lucas Duda to find his swing again. He has the kind of bat that could help the Met win a couple of close games. This is a middle of the order bat that needs to find his stroke again.
The Mets offense as a whole needs to swing a better bat especially with runners in scoring position, they have been stunningly able to win games without getting hits when there are ducks on the pond.
The Arizona Diamondbacks clearly take the edge on offense but like against most teams, the pitching matchup for the series favor the Mets.
On Friday Noah Syndergaard (3-4 3.38 ERA) goes against Chase Anderson (4-2 3.71 ERA). On Saturday Matt Harvey (7-6 3.11 ERA) opposes Patrick Corbin (1-0 3.60 ERA) in his second start of the season. And to round out the series Steven Matz takes the ball against Rubby De La Rosa (6-4 4.89).
After winning two series, one against the Dodgers and then the Giants, the Mets are in good position to win another series, at least from a pitching standpoint. I think the Mets could score a few runs while limiting the damage against these quick scoring Snakes.
What do you think of the matchup? Let me know what you think.
Send the fans into the All-Star break on a winning note! Let's go Mets!

Post Game: July 8, 2015
deGrom took the ball today wanting to prove that his last start was just a fluke. He was on a mission. As soon as he climbed up on the hill and toed the rubber up until the ball left his hand, he was zoned in. And this time, the offense picked him up.
The Mets offense scored on an error by Crawford to give the Mets a 1-0 lead. Then in the seventh Lagares helped add an insurance run. In the eighth inning, Campball hit a two run blast to add the icing on the cake. The Mets were up 4-0 going into the bottom of the ninth. Bobby Parnell came in to try to shut the door for deGrom. But he was only able last an out while surrendering a run. All-Star hopeful, Familia, came in to shut the door and put it in the books.
deGrom looked stellar in this game going eight strong shutout innings. He strikeout 10 batters while only allowing one free pass and two hits.
Murphy had another error over at third base today but deGrom was about to overcome that. The Mets continue their struggles to hit with runners in scoring position but I guess when you can’t really hit as a team, that shouldn’t really come as a surprise.
deGrom shook off last start and showed why he is an All-Star and it’s not just for his great hair. Plawecki extended his light hit streak to three games. Murphy and Duda got one hit combined for the series against the Giants. I don’t know how they won when the 2/3 of the middle of the order has been unable to produce.
Sandy should try to kick the tires on a number of guys. Alex Anthopoulos, of the Blue Jays, has said that he wants to make a splash. They are in need of some pitching. Maybe the Mets can lineup with the Blue Jays to make a deal for a bat seeing as how Toronto has a number of bats.
Do you think the Mets can get either Jose from Toronto (Reyes or Bautista)? But Anthopoulos might look to get back Noah along with more to even have a discussion for those guys.

Post Game: July 7, 2015
Bartolo Colon put forth another quality start but no Met touched home plate this game again. The first run scored due to an error by Murphy. Colon also had an error. A 27 out game turned into a 29 out game. This is a team that can’t give any team extra outs especially one as good as the Giants, they don’t have the best lineup in the majors but they play as a team.
Giants pitcher, Matt Cain, looked very good in his second start back from the disabled list. Plawecki and Granderson were the only two Met players that were able to muster a hit off of Cain. They both went for extra bases, a double and triple, respectively. He had seven strikeouts to go along with two walks. As good as Cain was, I think it had to do with a troubled Met offense too. They came away with only four hits over nine innings. Duda had another hitless night dropping down to the five hole.
On the bright side, Colon didn’t walk a batter tonight. Mejia is back in the bullpen and to make room for him they optioned Logan Verrett to Las Vegas. I think Verrett will be back though. He might have been demoted because of all the pitches he threw the other night for his first save of his career. I think he’ll be back up before the season is over. Carlos Torres has been very valuable for this team because he does anything the team has asked him to do. Over his tenure with the Mets he’s started, pitched in any inning when he’s been called upon, including closing out games. I think Carlos is a good pitcher and could be better if he wasn’t tossed around from inning one to nine. Alex Torres is a left handed arm and he didn’t seem likely to be designated for assignment. I had a feeling it would be a pitcher with options and both Torres’ don’t have any left.
The Giants have been looking for a rental player for third base, I don’t like trading away one of the Mets good hitters, but what about Murphy? I’m just not sure who would come back in return. Brandon Crawford MIGHT have been someone they could have gotten before the season started but he’s having a career year and I think it might take a little bit more than just Murphy. Crawford is a slick fielding shortstop that has swung the bat pretty well this year.
Tomorrow night first time All-Star Jacob deGrom will pitch against three time All-Star Jake Peavy (his last All-Star appearance coming in 2012). Hopefully deGrom can be deGrominate and start the Mets up in a streak in the other directions.
If you haven’t already, remember to vote for Familia. I know it’ll be tough for him to make it with Kershaw on that list. I really don’t know how Kershaw didn’t make the All-Star team to begin with but vote for your Met and you can click here to help get him to his first All-Star game.

Two Shutouts and an All-Star Selection
Let me first congratulate Jacob deGrom on his All-Star selection. He is very much worthy of it. The hair as well as what he does on the hill is definitely what got him to the All-Star game at Great American Ballpark. Bochy should look into letting him bat as well. Familia should be there and hopefully the fans will help propel him into his first All-Star game as well.
Now onto the game. Jon Niese has looked great since being able to five days rest in between starts as opposed to the usual four days of rest. Niese has quietly strung together some quality starts but the offense hasn't been able to put up the necessary run or two to provide Niese with the win. Tonight was different.
Tonight was a pitchers duel between Niese and Chris Heston. Heston in his last start against the Mets pitched a no-hitter so it was nice when Tejada singled in the first. The Mets really didn't have many scoring opportunities tonight. The stage seemed set for Monell, ex-Giant, to be the hero in the seventh inning with two one and one out but he couldn’t come through in that half frame. It was more of a foreshadow and he would get another opportunity. Monell got another opportunity in the ninth inning. Cuddyer led off the ninth inning with a single then, Nieuwenhuis, back with the club, hit a double. The stage was set for Monell to help the Mets win against his old ball club. He proceeded to double in two runs giving the Mets a 2-0 lead. Being the hero is always fun, but being the hero against your old ball club is just icing on the cake! Lagares then chased him home with a single.
Jeurys Familia then came in to slam the door in the bottom of the ninth earning his 23rd save. Familia deserves the final vote. If you could just take a minute and click here to vote for Familia that would be awesome. He is very much deserving of being an All-Star. Watching him close out games has been a real treat this year and he hasn’t been used in the conventional way. He was been asked to get more than three outs to close out the game. It’s so much fun to watch him play and he really enjoys the game.
Key Notes: Niese won his first game since May 9th. Niese worked quickly and that seemed to help his defense. Tejada made a few nice plays in the field. This is the second shutout in as many games.
Do you think Niese should still be traded? Who do you think the Mets should get for Niese? Should Familia be an All-Star? What do you think of the All-Star selections?

Let's go Matz!
The Mets have one of the toughest July’s scheduled and it’s shown. Even if they were hitting, this stretch would be difficult. They first got to see why there’s so much excitement coming from the north side of Chicago. Then they went to Los Angeles only to verse arguably the best one-two pitching staff in the majors, Clayton Kershaw and Zack Grienke. The Mets squeaked out a win in the game against Kershaw, but couldn’t find that same luck against, who looks like the best pitcher in the majors, Grienke. Today they versed Mike Bollsinger, and he’s like a breathe of fresh air compared to Grienke and Kershaw.
Granderson led off the game with an infield hit to the left side. It didn’t go far but the Dodgers stacked the right side of the diamond and he simply “hit it where they ain’t”. Granderson came in to score on a Flores single and put the Mets on the board first, giving Matz a lead. Something not many Met starting pitchers have been able to say lately.
The Mets scored three runs in one inning (twice- fourth and seventh inning). They have had recent trouble scoring three runs in a game but Matz seems to have helped the team to score when he plays, kind of like the same as Harvey did when he first came up. He’s bringing a winning feel to the mound with him. It could be that coupled with the fact that David Wright was in the clubhouse this weekend and I know that even though he’s not on the field yet, he still has a presence in that clubhouse. He is a leader in that young clubhouse. David Wright might not ever be the same player he once was but he is still a presence for such a young team.
As good as the Mets offense was today, Matz was better, going six strong innings with eight strikeouts and only five baserunners. He surrendered two hits, while allowing two free passes and hitting Adrian Gonzalez on the right hand.
The Mets scored their sixth and seventh run on a blunder by Puig. He simply lost the ball in right field. As good as Puig could be, his defense doesn’t match his bat. He is still someone that the Mets could look into getting. His bat is potent and his arm is strong. I don’t like that he affects the clubhouse in a negative way but maybe with the right manager and a change of scenery he could be a positive influence. Although it won’t show up in the scorecard as an error, it should have been caught by Puig. Lagares got a triple and two runs from Puig’s misplay.
The Mets finally won a road series, their first road series win since May. Matz simply compels you to watch the game not only because of what he could do when he takes the hill but also what he could do when he steps into the batters box.
The Mets slated fifteen hits while putting up crooked numbers in two innings, winning the game 8-0. Hopefully this isn’t a feast or famine offense because more often than not, this offense will be famine. This July schedule will show if the Mets are for real or not. If they can have a .500 July, I will be happy.
Key Notes: Matz has five RBI in his first two games. Don Mattingly walked Daniel Murphy in the fourth inning to load the bases and get to struggling Lucas Duda. Walking the number two batter to get to the three batter? That has to tell you something about the Mets offense Granderson continued his recent hot streak with another two hits. Flores added four hits on his impressive day at the plate. Logan Verrett earned his first career save with the remaining three inning of shutout ball.
What do you think about Matz so far? Did you know that Matz is one of only four Met pitchers to win their first two starts? Do you think this is the start of the team being able to score runs or just for today?
Pressure's On!
The other day I went to the game against the Cubs. The fans want the Wilpon’s to sell the team. If they can’t get get the players needed then why not sell?
It was Jacob deGrom against Jake Arrieta and you knew that deGrom was going to need to be perfect if the Mets were going to have a chance with the offensive inefficiency. As a matter of fact, as the person I went to the game with said, “If it wasn’t for deGrom, the Mets wouldn’t have scored.” It seems that that’s a running theme. The Mets pitching has taken all the responsibility, on both sides of the ball. deGrom had a double, and Granderson later chased him in with a double for the Mets lone run.
It seems like deGrom was feeling some pressure to be absolutely perfect and you can’t expect that from a pitcher. deGrom is a very good pitcher, one that has exceeded expectations and has surprised me in how he’s been in his sophomore year in the big leagues. I thought there was a sophomore slump in his future but he has proved me and most likely a few other fans wrong, and we are enjoying it!
The Mets need to trade for a bat, and don’t just make a trade to make a trade, no don’t do that Sandy. Find a batter, a young one, one that will provide good offensive numbers and go out and get that bat to rejuvenate the Mets swing.
deGrom shouldn’t be feeling the pressure, he should know that the offense is going to have his back. This pitching staff as a whole is hitting better than this every day offense. Matz at first base and deGrom at shortstop is starting to sound more potent of an offense than the one I’m seeing daily.
Sandy said it's unfair to fire Terry Collins because it's not his fault and Sandy is right it's not, it's the Wilpon's along with Sandy Alderson's fault becuase he hasn't provided Collins with the necessary bat to compete. Don't make a trade just to make a trade Sandy, New York Mets fans are loyal, not stupid. Make a trade like Billy Beane or Theo Epstein and bring in something for now with the future in mind. C'mon Sandy, if you're going to have Terry's back off the field, have it on the field too, have it completely!
Who do you think the Mets should get? Would you give up one of the big pitching prospects to get him? Which one? Do you think Terry Collins should finish out the year as the Mets manager?

Steven Matz Debut
The future seems like it’s now…for the pitching. Steven Matz took the hill today and a long awaited arrival. He got drafted six years ago and had a long road to the big leagues. I know it’s always a long road to the big leagues after being drafted but Matz had a injuries for about half of those years. In May of 2010, he had Tommy John surgery. Steven Matz, 24, a Long Island native went to Ward Melville High School. He went to the same high school as comedian Kevin James, but Matz’s pitching is no laughing matter, not today, not for the Reds.
In the first inning, with Brandon Phillips up, he threw three straight balls. Matz’s then served one up for Phillips and he hit it out to put the Reds on the board, 1-0. It was almost like a, “Welcome to the big leagues kid” kind of moment. Matz settled in and got out the inning only giving up that run in the first. In the second inning he stepped to the plate with two on and two out, and after showing what he could do with his arm for the two innings, he showed what he could do with his bat. He hit a double and gave the Mets the lead. Matz, who already looks like a little kid, was out there playing like it was little league, just having fun.
He grew up a Mets fan, like many of you have and when we were younger we’d say, “I’m going to help the Mets win games!” He’s getting to live that dream. He’s getting to help the Mets win games and that he did. He went three for three with four runs batted in. He’s the first Met ever to drive in four runs in their debut, and the first pitcher to complete that feat.
He has a great fastball, a changeup that allows a different pace and a curveball that looks nasty. I enjoyed watching how excited he was pitching and hitting (take notes Mr. Scherzer). Then looking at his family, they were, of course, thrilled when he put the Mets on the board. He was hands down, the player of the game today. The only question now is, can he play third base?
Other notes- Wilmer Flores batted fourth and played second. Cecilani started in centerfield later moving over to left field for Lagares. Cuddyer stole a base and I like seeing the Mets running, hit and running, bunting, stealing, pushing, trying to get ninety feet closer to scoring a needed run. They scored seven runs, after winning in the thirteenth inning of the suspended game a little earlier in the day. Jon Niese is drawing interest from the Chicago Cubs.
This has started out to be a very nice home stand. What did you think of the game? How do you think Matz is going to do this year? How do you like the idea of the six man rotation?

Post Game: June 25th 2015
Good pitching stops bad skids. Sometimes the hitting doesn’t come and that’s how you go on a road trip to lose seven straight games. deGrom took the hill today to put a stop to that. The offense has been quiet to say the least. They finally where able to scratch and claw for two runs.
deGrom has been great this season whenever he goes out there! Flores has 33 RBIs and I liked the aggressiveness on the base paths. Ceciliani stealing the base but wrongfully being called out and Granderson getting thrown out in what seems like a botched hit and run were two times the Mets tried to set themselves up to score. I like that they tried to score from first, didn’t like that he didn't try to slide to evade the tag but he almost did. I’m just happy the Mets were able to stop their skid of seven in a row.
They are going to need to be aggressive on the base paths but taking the extra base smartly. It’s always exciting when the Mets win and Familia closes the door. They started a new streak today and it all starts with one.
News: Murphy's Move to Third
Late June brings out the rumors. With Murphy coming back soon the Mets have said they will move Flores over to second and put Tejada over at shortstop, moving Murphy to third. This falls in line with the Mets, always making more work for themselves. Flores is tied for second with ten homeruns, while Tejada, on his ninth life has found his bat. The Mets should try to shop Murphy around if his bat wakes up for the next few weeks. The Mets seem to lineup great with the Cubs and the Brewers. The Brewers have Segura and ex-Met Carlos Gomez on the trade block while the Brewers are in need of pitching. The Cubs are in need of pitching and have a lot of infield help but the Cubs are probably going to try to reunite with Jeff Samardzija.
Through all this commotion and rumors, it doesn’t sound like Sandy Alderson will be making any move necessary for the Mets to regain a weak NL East. I’m not talking about a move just to make a move but if they make a move for a leadoff hitter- which Segura and Gomez both can provide- it can move Granderson down in the order to lengthen the order. Ben Zobrist is another name, but what would the A’s be asking for? Billy Beane is great at evaluating talent and he is going to want someone that help the team now, while under control for at least a couple of years. Maybe Niese and some lower level prospect with Kazmir on his way out? Beane will do his due diligence to make sure he is able to get the best deal he sees for his team.
There are a lot of moving parts when Murphy comes back. Murphy will move to third base, Flores to second and Tejada to short. This makes me think that Wright might not be back until after the trade deadline if at all this year. It’s either that reason or they will be trading Murphy before Wright comes back. I do hope Wright comes back and that he’s healthy and ready to go. I think he could help this team more than with just his bat. Every year I look at the options and keep looking, hoping the Mets made a move that helps the club but I’m always let down on July 31st. Maybe this year it will be different?

Left Side Help Needed
Okay so the Mets have Dilson Herrera back in the lineup at second base and Murphy could be back sometime next week. David Wright is very hopeful to be coming back around the All Star break but that, in my opinion, is wishful thinking if he can stay on the field. The Mets have said they don’t want to bring on extra salary which doesn’t make any sense seeing as how they need a bat for that playoff push that the Met fanbase has longed for since 2006. I love what the kids have been able to do in the midst of all these injuries. The Mets pitching will keep the Mets in ball games but the hitting needs to help and show up. Here are some names that could be floating around for a trade to help what seems like an offensively challenged team.
Ariamis Ramirez is in his final year of his career. He is owed $14 million this year and then is looking to hang up his cleats. He can still play an adequate third base and even though his numbers don’t show it this year, he could be a good offensive player. I don’t think that he is the answer but he might be able to come inexpensively and coupled with someone like say, Jean Segura could be had for the right price.
Jean Segura is just entering arbitration after this year and is a talented shortstop. This might make his price tag a little high if the Brewers see him as their future shortstop. He might also be the piece the Mets are looking for at the leadoff position. The Mets would probably need to take Ramirez in a deal like this, making Ramirez a bench player. This trade would also move Wilmer Flores over to third while trying to find a trade partner for Daniel Murphy.
Martin Prado can play all over the diamond and he can hit. He’s not the big thumper the Mets are in need of but he plays the game hard, with fire and gets on base. He could bat two, six or seven in this lineup while playing third base (as well as second and the corner outfield positions). But he’s a Marlin and division trades usually cost a little more unless the Marlins are doing one of their famous fire sales. He is owed $22 million through 2016.
Gordon Beckham has not turned out what the White Sox had hoped when they took him in the first round but a change of scenery could help the 28 year old third baseman. He is only owed two million and then is a free agent next year.
Alexei Ramirez plays a decent shortstop and swings a pretty decent bat. He can even swipe a few bags along the way. If he walked a little bit more he could be a very good leadoff hitter but this is just a name at this point in his career. Flores is better than him currently but it allows Flores to move to third base. He is also owed $20 million through 2016. He might be too expensive for his output.
Since I’m already talking about White Sox a name that has always been fun to say is Emilio Bonifacio. He doesn’t have much pop, if any at all but can swipe a bag or two and has the ability to play so many positions. He’s more of a bench player and spot starter than an every day player. He’s only owed three million dollars this year with four million next year with a one million dollar buyout.
Starlin Castro is a name that has been tossed around for the Mets a lot in the last year. The Cubs have so many middle infielders that he and/or Javier Baez have become expendable. Castro has some pop, plays at best an average shortstop but he’s still a pretty decent choice and would add a little something to this Mets lineup. He’s signed for $43 million through the 2019 season with roughly $4.5 in signing bonuses and a club option for 2020 worth $16 million with a one million dollar buyout.
Cliff Pennington is a shortstop that is only on this list because of his price tag. He is only owed $3.3 million through this year and then becomes a free agent.
Brad Miller is another name that has been thrown around connected with the Mets. He’s shown glimpses of what he is capable of. He still has one more year of team control before even entering arbitration so his price tag might be little steep but he’s a decent fielder that can also play a little second base and outfield.
Ben Zobrist is also a name connected with the Mets but he’s also connected with every other team in the league because of his versatility. He can play second, short, third as well as all three outfield positions. He can add offense and defense to any team. Sometimes you make a trade to help your team as well as blocking another from getting him. This trade would be just that. The Nationals has been rumored to be looking at acquiring him. The Mets might be outbid here and that’s why he’s so far down on this list. He’s only owed $7.5 million this season and then becomes a free agent.
Just for fun, Troy Tulowitzki is a name that always comes up with the Mets. He’s healthy and has shown he can still hit but is he worth the price tag? He’s owed $128 million through the 2021 season. At this point he’s probably more a fantasy for the Mets than a reality because the Mets aren’t going to pay what the Rockies are asking, and I actually think they are right in doing so. As great as Tulowitzki could be on the Mets, I just can’t figure out how to pay a guy that much that will spend a nice chunk of time on the DL. He and Wright would be great on the field together but they will probably spend more time together on the DL than on the field.
What could have been…Jose Reyes. I just have to add him to this list. I really wish I didn’t have to because I wish he was still on this team but he’s not and the way he was let go has always left me bitter. He’s owed $88 million through the 2018 season. He could be a great spark plug for this team but the Blue Jays are not going to trade especially now that they’ve found their winning ways. For me it was never that they didn’t resign Reyes but they didn’t make a decision to either get something for him or make him a real offer. He was always fun to watch, on the base paths and in the field. He caused havoc on the base paths and was a big reason why the Mets scored first while he was here. I miss him, his presence and what he brought to this team.
I heard an interesting name the other day and the Mets have looked at him before, Jose Bautista. If not one Jose, why not the other? This guy can hit the ball. The Mets got a first hand look at him last night with his two homers and will get another look at him tonight. I don’t think the Jays give him up because of how hot they are currently but there’s a lot of time between now and the trade deadline. He would be a big bat for the Mets and get the fans excited when he steps into the box. Just another name to think about Sandy.
The Mets probably don’t make a move to put them over the hump to make a playoff push leaving the fans confused and wanting the Wilson’s gone even more. I think that the roster you see now is the roster they will move forward with unless it’s an internal or minor move. They have the chance to make it back to the playoffs with this pitching staff, but this offensive leaves us wondering why not add a few more onto the payroll? I understand that the Kansas City Royals and Oakland Athletics can do but in one of the biggest markets why not give the fans a name that they can say, “We have a chance!”
What do you think? Do you think they get any of these players? Are there any other players you think that should be on this list?
